How & Where Your Registration Fees are Used
SDMS works hard to keep practice costs low which is why 2015 is the first increase in two years. We also strive for transparency about where and how your fees are used.
Read more below.
SDMS Team Expenses
The registration fees we charge cover team expenses like:
- Payroll
- Pool use fees
- Insurance
- Meet expenses
- Ribbons & medals
- Online shop fees
- and several other items
SDMS’s biggest expense is payroll. Unlike many teams around Des Moines, with two or three coaches on staff, SDMS has 6-10 any given season. This allows for more tailored instruction and a better practice environment, but it also costs more money.
Calculating Registration Fees
We typically look at the annual operating budget and break that down by an estimated number of swimmers on the team. However in doing so, we also calculate a dollar amount per hour in the pool (practices/meets) and ensure that it is reasonable and that we don’t exceed it. As a swimmer progresses to higher levels (Advanced, MS Elite, ect) – this “per hour” rate goes down.
For example: our Novice and Intermediate swimmers spend approximately 100 hours in the water each year. Even without the 15% year-round discount, that’s only about $4/hour. The Advanced swimmers spend around 120 hours in the pool (not including the two swim camps) and pay even less per hour to be in the water.
Cost Comparison
SDMS always takes into account what other swim clubs charge, even when they are structured differently. In the Des Moines area, you’ll find clubs that range from $250-$1500 per swimmer annually. Those teams offer a range of programs, from only local club swimming to full USA teams.
SDMS remains unique in the metro area. We offer a standard, local club swimming option, USA Swimming for interested athletes and even swim lessons for young ones not ready to join the competitive team.
These program options help us stand apart.
Feeder Program for Lincoln Swimming
SDMS is the official swim club for Lincoln Swimming. It is exclusive to athletes who will swim for Lincoln when they are in high school and every year, we turn away dozens of athletes who don’t meet this criteria.
As Coach Weber always says, “We don’t train the competition.” South DM Swimming is invested in continuing to build swimming for Lincoln and the Southside community. It’s one reason SDMS is a booster for the high school teams; we help support the athletes as they strive to meet their goals and make lasting memories.
Thank you!
Of course, SDMS wouldn’t exist without our families and fans. We are truly honored to work with your young athletes to teach the value of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work, and (of course) swimming technique!
